As part of the tradition, every Lunar New Year celebrations, we purchase new clothes for the new year. Buying yourself new clothes or buy as a gift for your family is a sign of a new beginning, ridding of the old and a new change.
In the past Chinese tradition, mothers or wives would sew new clothes for the new year ahead. The way to dress for the Chinese New Year is to wear a cheongsam or also known as qipao 旗袍, and for the males are tangzhuang 唐裝. These pieces of clothing are normally made of silk cloth with bright colours and intricate designs.
One of the common practices is to wear the colour red during the Lunar New Year. It is a lucky colour that represents strength and prosperity.
Now in modern fashion, many people rarely wear traditional clothing. However, it is still an inspiration to continue such a tradition.
